081 of 181. The four horses placed on the front façade of the basilica, in pairs above the central portal, were originally part of a monument at the Hippodrome of Constantinople. They were placed here after the sack and looting of Constantinople in 1204. They were seized by Napoleon in 1797 but were returned in 1815. The horses outside are replicas as the originals are stored inside of the Basilica. | |||
