047 of 182. The deep gorge of the Tagus River beyond is spanned by the Puente de Alcántara. The bridge was built over two arches with a fortified gate on the West side by the Romans after they founded the city and was originally one of the few entrances into the city. The present structure as you see it today is mainly 13th Century.
