028 of 182. This is a monument to King Philip IV which stands at the center of the Plaza de Oriente on the east side of the Royal Palace. The statue, created in 1639, has the King's horse rearing up on its hind legs. This presented a problem to the Italian sculptor because he was afraid that the horse would break or fall over because of the weight. Before making the statue he consulted with Galileo who told him to make the front of the horse hollow and the back solid. It was the first successful attempt at creating a statue with a prancing horse.
