	157 of 226. There were two natural disasters in the 17th century, one of which was the 1669 Etna eruption. The lava flow surrounded the city of Catania, widening the coast by nearly a mile. While the monastery was not destroyed by the lava, it added a 40 ft. high wall of lava stone abutting it.
