079 of 152. In the center of the piazza stands the famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi or Fountain of the Four Rivers (1651) topped by the Obelisk of Domitian. An interesting note: The fountain was created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the most celebrated sculptors in history. The Pope, however, had in fact already assigned the project to Borromini, Bernini's rival. Bernini managed to get his hands on the project by sending the pope's sister-in-law a silver model of the Fountain. The pope just "happened" to see it and was so struck by it that he abandoned Borromini's design and commissioned the work to Bernini.
