37 of 84. We took the train to the once buried town of Herculaneum. Historians say it was probably founded in the 7th century BC, and until the eruption of 79 AD, it stood on the seashore (The eruption dropped so much material into the sea that it pushed the shore back 1.2 miles) Lava covered the town which helped preserve it and all its artifacts.
