087 of 123. Originally, Lucca had over 100 towers within its walls, each was the home and private fortress of a wealthy family. These residences were single rooms one above the other. Starting from the bottom was the shop, above that the living room and then the kitchen. The floors were typically connected by exterior wooden staircases. In the photo above, arrows reveal where this stair was originally attached.
