046 of 123. The marble statue of David by Michelangelo was created between 1501 and 1504 and commissioned to be positioned along the roofline of the east end of the Florence Cathedral. In January of 1504, authorities had to admit there would be little possibility of raising the more than 6-ton statue to the roof of the cathedral and decided instead to place it next to the entrance to the Palazzo Vecchio. In 1873 the statue of David was removed from the piazza to protect it from damage, and is currently displayed in the Accademia Gallery, Florence. A replica was placed in the Piazza della Signoria in 1910.
