044 of 123. In 1401, a competition was announced to design doors which would eventually be placed on the north side of the baptistery. A 21-year-old Lorenzo Ghiberti won the competition (along with Filippo Brunelleschi). The gilded bronze doors consisted of twenty-eight panels known as 'The Gates of Paradise' and took Ghiberti 21 years to complete.
